You should not have a fun, fast car for your first car. Ever.

This. You need something safe, reliable, and practical. Something that’ll teach you the responsibilities of car ownership, whether it’s basic maintenance, safe driving, or something to help you build a clean insurance record. Hence why I always, always recommend a Camry. We like to hate on the Camry, but it’s actually a really damn good car.

03-06 Pontiac GTO if you want to dive into the extensive world of LS/V8

90-91 CRX Si imported with B16A1 if you want to go JDM (Newer JDM, S2k)

VW GTI if you want German engineering (even if it’s overrated)

Land Cruise or Wrangler for the off roaders.

It just all depends on the road they want to take. No one car can define all the different enthusiasts and car cultures out there. Some want power, some want to climb mountains, some want low and slow, and some want to apex everything.

Acura Integra GS-R (or LS). Sports-tuned double-wishbone suspension, screaming DOHC VTEC engine, and the best shifter you’ll put your hands on for under $5000.

I vote for a clean, well maintained E46 325 sedan or wagon.

It’s practical, safe, and not too fast for the kid to get into easy trouble.

That platform is a pleasure to live with and will definitely get the enthusiast juices flowing, and it’s very reliable and affordable if you keep up on the maintenance, which is also a good thing for a budding enthusiast to be responsible for. And if he’s really an enthusiast, he’ll enjoy doing it.

There are common failure points (cooling system, MAF, guibos, etc.) But they’re all pretty simple to rectify(very easy car to work on) and not as expensive as the uneducated would have you believe. Again, a budding enthusiast will probably enjoy taking care of these issues them self.

Safe, cool, practical, just fast enough and educational.

Also you’ll come wayyyyyy under budget.

A R50 Mini Cooper. The maintenance could be tricky. It’s slow, but handles really good to teach how be fast.

Something free/cheap that you have to work on yourself. Because if you don’t learn that shit while you have access to all your parents’ tools and knowledge (if applicable), you’ll be one of Those People: resigned to paying other people to do things or taking days to bungle an easy job with YouTube guidance.

Which also raises a huge problem with the FiST as a first car, it encourages you to drive faster.

A FiST under $15k is going to be ragged out. Actually any used FiST is going to be ragged out.

Nissan Versa Note because it’s slow and cheap but practical to the point where you won’t want to get rid of it immediately.

Forces you to work harder to get a better car.

Agreed. If they are truly a budding enthusiast, chances are they won’t be able to resist tinkering with it anyway.

My first car was a ‘95 Maxima, and that was probably too much car for most first-time drivers. Thankfully I was able to explore it’s abilities and emerge on the other side still alive and with the car in one piece.

I got two old American luxury cars while I was in high school, and since I turned 16 first out of all my friends, their parents ended up buying the same for them. Nobody ever had a budget of more than $5,000, and if you’re looking for something safe and generally reliable, whats better than a 15 year old boat? They were guaranteed to have dual airbags, traction control, and seatbelt pretentioners. They had good sound systems that didn’t need to be replaced, and either a V8 or a supercharged V6. I had a Park Avenue Ultra and a Lincoln Continental, one friend had a 2002 Cadillac Seville STS, another had a 2002 Mercury Grand Marquis LSE. One pushed the envelope and got a 1995 Mercedes S420. They were all fast but slow, safe, and the nicest cars in the parking lot.

When anybody asks me what they should buy their 16 year old though, my answer is the same, car enthusiast or not: 2003 Buick LeSabre Limited Celebration Edition. Looks good, pulls hard, loaded to the hilt, all the luggage space you could need for college.

I know I’m a few days behind commenting, but I just have to emphasize how true it is.

My last vehicles before I bought my Fiesta: BRZ, classic Mini, NA Miata, motorcycle. Fun cars, easy to drive like a responsible adult.

My god, the Fiesta is evil. It’s so forgiving and so torque-y, it just begs you to drive like a fool. It’s much easier to resist now that I’ve had it for some time, but those first few weeks featured some driving that I probably wouldn’t care to admit to. I wouldn’t say it was illegal or unsafe, just that I thought I held myself to better than that.

Most fun DD I’ve had.

My FoST hasn’t quit that. In some ways, I think it has grown worse with time. It has too much power and is too cheap for me to be completely responsible in it, plus it never scares me (except on the stock Eagle F1s in temperatures below 40F), so it just keeps egging me on to test the limits so I know where they are. But they keep eluding me and I become more of a hooligan.

A coworker that rode in both my cars and followed me on his motorcycle pointed out that I’m this super safe and mature guy behind the wheel of my sensible car where I know my limits, don’t test them, and drive very smooth/conservatively. Then I get behind the wheel of the FoST... Next thing you know I’m taking corners like a maniac, doing handbrake turns, racing (and beating) him at stop lights, and other crazy stuff that I really shouldn’t be doing.

Further, you cannot avoid speeding in this car unless you drive almost entirely by cruise control.

From what I’ve been told, the FiST is even worse...

It is addicting... I say that I could drop it right now due to some of my issues with the car, but that’s a lie. It’s a drug.

It’s one of the reasons I’m leaving the exhaust stock-ish (resonator delete). So I can be a less noticeable asshole
